Murphy to Manteo

Murphy to Manteo is an expression North Carolinians use to mean "across the state" -- Murphy is a town in the mountains while Manteo is on our world-famous Outer Banks. While going to school out in California, Steven was astounded by the number of people who's only conception of North Carolina came from (admittedly unflattering) news coverage. Steven resolved to show off all the natural beauty, rich cultural traditions, deep history and, yes, amazing food with the broader public.

Generally, I plan on hosting folks the first week of November. I see the plan (roughly) as follows:

  1. Arrive in RDU. Spend afternoon and next morning exploring Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. Spend 1 night in the Triangle.
  2. Take train to Greensboro. Spend 1 night exploring Greensboro, including a world-famous haunted Halloween forest.
  3. Drive to Boone. Spend 2 nights in the mountains (not in a tent, don't worry).
  4. Drive to Charlotte. Spend one night in Charlotte. Fly out of CLT.

FAQ

As little as possible! I expect you to buy your own food and drinks, but I hope that with clever scheduling, transportation and accomodation can be covered by traveling to places where I know folks or have housing. Of course, this is all dependent on the final itinerary.

I dunno. I hope to get a diverse group of people together but this is all a big experiment.
